About the Shelter
Shelter 88 provides a safe haven for approximately 60 dogs and 13 cats in Hua Hin, Thailand, honoring the deep connection these animals have to Thai culture, community life, and Buddhist values of compassion. For generations, Soi dogs and cats have lived alongside people in Thailand — roaming temple grounds, protecting neighborhoods, and becoming part of the rhythm of everyday life. They are not strays in the Western sense; they are community animals woven into Thailand’s history.
The shelter is led by an elderly Thai man, who cares for these animals. While the dogs receive occasional food from the local temple, the cats often struggle to secure the resources and donations needed for their health and well‑being.
The shelter's focus is helping the dogs and cats to thrive in their natural environment — offering protection, treatment, and kindness so they can live peacefully, whether at the shelter, in the community, or with adoptive families.
The shelter relies heavily on donations to operate and requires approximately $15,000 USD per year to cover food, medical treatment, emergency rescues, and ongoing care. Donations of any size make a meaningful difference and directly support the wellbeing of these animals.
Meet Some of the Dogs and Cats Who Need Sponsors
The shelter always needs monthly sponsors to help cover boarding, medical and food care for a number of dogs and cats who need extra tender, love and care.
Each animal can cost up to 500 baht/week (about $15/USD) in added expenses. Any donation no matter big or small can make a real impact. A monthly commitment will help keep these dogs and cats safe, medicated, and prpoperly cared for.
Hugo and Juno
Brothers who are both blind from 100% retinal detachment. Hugo sadly had to have his left eye removed after a year of battling inflammation and infections. They are both very gentle souls and easier to keep them boarded then at the shelter since they need contant attention.
Freddy and Jane
Dumped on the roadside in a cage after sterilization. They need medication twice daily, so boarding is essential. Gentle, good dogs who deserve stability.
Rory
UPDATE: Rory has been adopted and is now called Max.
Little fighter Rory was back at the vet for physio (which he’s smashing like a champ ) and then another visit for a tummy bug. He is now on the mend and his foster is doing daily physio with him, and he's splashing into the pool for water fitness!
Chilli
Chilli had been hiding in the undercarriage of a truck. He got a kitten spa (aka flea bath) at the shelter and needed to be dewormed and get blood support. He will start his vaccinations soon. While he is with a foster, the shelter needs donations to help cover his food and any additional medical costs.
